SCARLETT

In Memory of Kitty Scarlett O'Hara
May 3, 1992 - Nov 3, 2006

This is when she was young and vibrant...

Back in 1992, Patrick and I were watching one of my favorite movies, Gone with the Wind. We heard a small meow outside our window and upon investigation, we found a stray black cross-eyed kitty in the alleyway of our apartment complex. We had two kitties already so we thought it would be best if we took her to the Animal Shelter with the hopes they'd find her a good home. But three days later, we decided to spring her because she had a very friendly disposition and thought she needed to live with us instead. When we got her home, we decided to call her "Kitty Scarlett O'Hara", a play on Vivien Leigh's character (Katie Scarlett O'Hara) in GWTW. Our little cross-eyed stray kitty grew into a very loving, non-cross eyed kitty with beautiful sleek black fur and golden eyes.

Without knowing it, this is one of the last pictures we took of her...

The day we lost her...it wasn't as unexpected as when we lost her brother Lycos, but it was still very hard for us. When Patrick got home that night, we decided then that we needed to take her to the vet to ease the suffering that she was obviously in. I think she was ready to be released from the pain because when we brought the crate in, she walked right into it...this kitty never walked into the crate, I fought her each and every time. We got her to the emergency vet and after her exam, again just as I did with Lycos, I watched as the vet eased her over the Rainbow Bridge. We couldn't let her go to her new home alone without hearing our voices and feeling the love that we have for her. And even though technically, she passed on the 4th just a minute or so after midnight, she will always share Lycos's day of the 3rd.

I take comfort in the fact that she's once again a healthy beautiful black kitty and that Lycos was there waiting for her with open paws. I told her as she passed to go find Lycos...he'd be there to greet her and knowing him, he probably started to chase her like he did when they were together as earth furkids in the Tan House.

This is her memorial spot in the backyard...her ashes are in our office where she can spend time with her feline siblings....

Dearest Kitty Scarlett O'Hara....we will always love you and miss you. Until we are all reunited....

A Cat's Prayer to Bast

As I lay me down to sleep
I pray to Bast my soul to keep,
I pray to Bast my soul to take,
And transport it to the sandy lands
Where my forbears worshipped were,
Where my ancient kin were much revered
And where the cat first learned to purr.

As I pad on velvet feet
I pray Bast will give me mice to eat,
And as I use my litter tray
I ask that she will find me play,
In her bright heaven where all cats,
Are stroked by Bast's most blessed hands,
And bask and gambol in her care,
Remembering Egypt's ancient sands.

As I knead upon your knees,
I hope that Bast is greatly pleased
To see her child at rest and play,
Fed and cared for every day,
And when I reach that glorious place
And gaze upon her feline face,
I'll ask that Bast will grant you grace
To join me in eternal play.

The Purry Gates

It seems that I've reached Heaven,
or its doorstep at any rate,
and been winding round St. Peter's ankles
by the Pearly Gates,
I've plucked the angels' harp strings
and made a merry sound,
But it's plucking at my heartstrings
that you are not around.

So I think I'll sit and wait here,
just outside the door,
And as the souls come floating in,
I'll tap them with my paw,
And when you seek admittance,
they'll rename this place -
It will become Purradise,
and these the Purry Gates!
